The New Fluval G

The new Fluval from Hagen is really an innovative filter. When I first saw it, I thought, “That’s one of the nicest looking filters I’ve seen, but why bother?”. And did those guys over at Hagen answer. The most notable thing about the G is the big blue LCD display up front. The HydroTech monior will keep track of temperature, flow rate, and conductivity and store that information to help you see what is going on in your tank. After I got done looking at that, I soaked up the beauty of the filter. You can see if for yourself at our store this Saturday or at www.fluval-g.com.
When I pulled it apart, I noticed that the locking levers are metal, not plastic. I asked about corrosion, and they said it was made from a super secret alloy that would not corrode in fresh or salt water.
Of course it has 3 stage filtration as you would expect, but they put the media in a brand new quick release format that was completely unexpected. This new feature allows you to change the cartridges much easier, and when you look closely you see the water kinda flows backwards from what we are used to. This means all the water gets filtered, not getting by the media.
They’ve also redone the biological media. No real big surprises here, but it seems like it could be more efficient.
They also changed the hoses, back to smooth hoses which I like more. Also the Aquastop is redesigned, with the locking nuts working better.
They made the chemical media basket refillable, but I would use the Tri-Ex cartridges. They are a higher grade then you can buy bulk. According to Hagen, if they bulk out this higher grade stuff, it will cost more because of an import tax on bulk carbon. But when it contained in the cartridge, it is not taxed at the same rate.
Overall, this is a high end filter, well worth the price. If you would like to see one, please drop by and ask us about it. We should have them this Saturday.
